After more than a decade of leadership by a moderate executive, members of Surrey's Guru Nanak Sikh Temple have elected a full slate of new executives from an orthodox youth group. The Sikh Youth group campaigned on promises to unite the Sikh community, and also to follow a controversial edict to remove tables and chairs from the temple's communal kitchen. That edict led to violent confrontations in 1996 and 1997, when some of the fundamentalists at Guru Nanak tried to remove the furniture against the wishes of the moderates who governed the temple.
